Vuonna 2004 Marc Collinin ja Olivier Libauxin johtama pariisilainen yhtye Nouvelle Vague julkaisi ensimmäisen albuminsa vieden alkuperäisen konseptinsa maailmalle: new wave = bossa nova = Nouvelle Vague.

Punkin ja new waven “standardeja” tulkittiin 50- ja 60-lukujen unenomaisen bossa novan tyyliin, rehevillä sovituksilla ja kiehtovilla vokaaleilla höystettynä. Nouvelle Vaguesta tuli pian maailmanlaajuinen ilmiö.

Vain muutamassa kuukaudessa Nouvelle Vague irtautui “coverbändin” käsitteestä ja ilahdutti loppuunmyytyjä konserttisaleja, joiden yleisöt lähes unohtivat alkuperäisversiot.

Olivier Libaux ja Marc Collins loivat yhtyeen laulajien Camille ja Mélanie Painin rinnalla minimaalisia esityksiä, joissa on vain kaksi ainutlaatuista ääntä, kitara, muutamia kosketinsoittimia ja elektronista ambienssia. Maailmankiertueet odottivat.

20 vuotta myöhemmin vuonna 2024 Nouvelle Vague julkaisi viimeisimmän albuminsa “Should I Stay Or Should I Go?” Yksi syy bändin pitkäikäisyyteen piilee siinä, että se ei juuri koskaan toista itseään. Uusin albumi on jälleen muutos uuteen suuntaan. Sen kappaleet nojaavat poppiin, vaikka sen juuret ovatkin syvällä post punk -aikakaudessa.

In 2004, at the height of the French Touch, the Parisian collective 'Nouvelle Vague', led by Marc Collin and Olivier Libaux, released their first album, taking its' original concept worldwide: New Wave = Bossa Nova = Nouvelle Vague.

Punk and New Wave "standards" are thus reinterpreted in the dreamy style of 50s and 60s Bossa Nova, with its' lush arrangements and entrancing vocals. Nouvelle Vague soon became a global phenomenon.

In just a few months, Nouvelle Vague deconstructed the notion of "the cover band" and, supported by some of the most prestigious labels (Peacefrog, Luaka Bop, Rough Trade, PIAS), delights an audience that almost forgets the original versions.

Alongside singers Camille and Mélanie Pain, Olivier Libaux and Marc Collin create their first live show: a minimal show, with just two unique voices, a guitar, a few keyboards and electronic ambience. A triumphant world tour would follow.

20 years later in 2024 the band celebrated the release of their latest album “Should I Stay Or Should I Go?” At least part of their longevity might be down to the fact that Nouvelle Vague seldom repeat themselves. They long ago expanded their remit to take in different styles of music, different types of song. Accordingly, “Should I Stay Or Should I Go” shifts things on again. This time, there are more songs that lean towards pop, albeit with their roots in the post punk era.
