Jazzlegenda Olli Ahvenlahti saapuu G Livelabiin all-star-kokoonpanonsa kanssa!
Mirror Mirror -albumi (2024) on Olli Ahvenlahdelle paluu sähköisemmän jazzfunkin pariin edellisen, akustisen yhtyeen kanssa soitetun kokopitkän Thinking, Whistling (We Jazz Records, 2017) jälkeen. Ahvenlahden yhtye esiintyi levyä edeltäneillä keikoilla nimellä The Poet II, joten yhteys vuonna 1976 julkaistuun klassikkolevyyn The Poet on ilmeinen. Levyä ei kuitenkaan lähdetty tekemään suoraan "jatko-osamielessä", joten musiikillinen latu oli studiossa avoin myös kokonaan uusiin suuntiin.
Ahvenlahden yhtyeessä levyllä ja keikoilla mukana ovat trumpetisti Jukka Eskola, saksofonisti Joonatan Rautio, basisti Ville Herrala ja rumpali Jaska Lukkarinen – kukin maamme ykkösryhmää toteuttamaan säveltäjän visiota. Ahvenlahti itse miehittää kosketinsoittimia, jotka on levyn tietoihin kirjattu muodossa ”Fender Rhodes Seventy Three Electric Piano and Oberheim Synthesizer”. Maestro osaa antaa tilaa myös loistavalle yhtyeelleen ja levyn kokonaissoundi on korvia hivelevän tyylipuhdasta, mutta myös sopivasti ryöpsähtelevää ja yllättävää. Pitkän uran tuoma kokemus tuo Ahvenlahden sävelkynään kiireettömyyden ja rehellisyyden tuntua.

The album Mirror Mirror (2024) marks Olli Ahvenlahti’s return to a more electric jazz-funk sound following his previous full-length release, Thinking, Whistling (We Jazz Records, 2017), performed with an acoustic ensemble. In the concerts leading up to the album, Ahvenlahti’s band performed under the name The Poet II, making the connection to his 1976 classic The Poet unmistakable. However, the new album was not conceived as a direct sequel, leaving the musical direction in the studio open to entirely new paths.
Both on the album and on stage, Ahvenlahti’s ensemble features trumpeter Jukka Eskola, saxophonist Joonatan Rautio, bassist Ville Herrala, and drummer Jaska Lukkarinen — each among the top tier of Finnish musicians, bringing the composer’s vision to life. Ahvenlahti himself handles keyboards, listed in the album credits as “Fender Rhodes Seventy Three Electric Piano and Oberheim Synthesizer.” The maestro also knows how to give space to his outstanding band, resulting in a beautifully polished overall sound that is at once refined, yet suitably vibrant and full of surprises. The experience of a long career lends Ahvenlahti’s compositions a sense of unhurriedness and honesty.
